A Ribbon Flower Challenge Inspiration
If you haven’t heard, we just announced our Ribbon Flower Craft Challenge! We will be providing 10 participants with their choice of ribbons to create a craft project with!
Maybe you love ribbon, but aren’t quite sure what to do with them yet. Or maybe you just love to see some gorgeous ribbon flowers…or both! Well, either way, the Ribbonistas have gotten together to give you a healthy dose of inspiration.
If you are interested in participating, go ahead & email me your idea!
It’s no secret that I love May Arts Silk Ribbon! I was inspired by the bouquet of one of my bridal customers (she’s using these stunning silk colors as streamers on her bouquet) to create my own “bouquet” of May Arts silk roses. You can find the tutorial at the link. A few May Arts Jumbo Leaves (448-16) are the perfect accent. You can create dozens in no time! Use them to embellish gift wrap, sew onto hair clips or combs, handmade cards, gift bags, or make your own beautiful silk bouquet. I hope you’re inspired to create your own rose bouquet!

I love making ribbon flowers, but thought it would be fun for this challenge to try to make one that was new to me. This chrysanthemum type flower was created by cutting about 40-50 pieces of satin ribbon, about 4″ long. I tied a loose knot in the center of each piece, and then sewed them together. I used the darker aqua for the center of the flower. This turned out rather large and dimensional, so I thought it would make a lovely pin for a springy infinity scarf.
I’ve created a flower using 1.5″ denim ribbon! Rolling the ribbon shows both colors & adds to the interest. 🙂 A little 3/8″ eyelet trim is tucked in for the center, as well as embellishing the clip on which the denim flower is attached!

I choose to use the NX ribbon. What is fun about this ribbon is the stitch down the center. Cut a 6″ length and then pull the stitch down the center on both ends and tie the stitch in a knot. You end up with these little ruffly buds. I like to use these little buds as fillers for bigger flowers and on vines. NX comes in 10 other colors that will co-ordinate with any project.

I absolutely adore that May Arts offers many different colors of raffia along with the traditional natural color. I chose to create some really fun and quirky “Horton Hears a Who” inspired flowers using two shades of the trim and a simple twig stem, along with a big, bold and beautiful flower pin using white raffia.

These sweet little flowers are so simple to create. Just cut a 4 to 6 inch length of ribbon and fold it over at just a bit less than the halfway point lengthwise. A running stitch along the folded edge that you use to scrunch the ribbon into a round creates your flower. Stitch a button center to finish them off!
I wanted to think outside the box a bit and start with some our shaped or die cut ribbons. So the first one that I knew would work well, we’re the sequins hearts. They have a natural petal shape to begin with. Then the more experimental were the stars. Then, turned out, they too made a pretty funky, pointy flower. Just add a large button to the middle, to hide all the messy layers and you are done!
